Producers also are seeking kids to highlight on the show's daily "ZOOM Into Action" segment, part of a national multimedia campaign designed to motivate kids to get involved in volunteerism and advocacy. "We're looking for real kids who are curious, who are good listeners and good communicators and who know how to have fun," says Kathy Shugrue, managing producer, adding that "We work hard to make sure that the process is an enjoyable one so that all kids, whether they get a callback or not, walk away feeling good about their experience." Parents can call the ZOOM hot line at 61 to make an appointment. ![]() They can tell a story, share a joke, do a trick or sing a song (a capella) and, most important, "be themselves," Gunther says. Aspiring ZOOMers will have one minute to give an original presentation. Other Cape kids will have a chance to join next season's show. When he learned that open auditions were being held for new cast members last January, he decided to give it a try "because it looked like fun," he says. Of the seven Massachusetts-based ZOOMers, who range in age from 9 to 13, Michael is the only one from Cape Cod. "He's an amazing, all-around great kid who is very bright, has a great sense of humor and relates well to other kids." "Michael sparkles," says Marcy Gunther, the show's content producer. ![]()
